What is Naturopathic Medicine?
Naturopathic medicine is a primary health care system with a patient-centred approach that emphasizes illness prevention, treatment, and optimal health. It involves a functional medicine approach to healthcare, identifying the biochemical and physiological imbalances within the individual, and using natural, evidence-based solutions to rectify these imbalances.
Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) focus on a healthy diet and lifestyle, naturally occurring substances, minimally invasive methods, and the promotion of natural healing.
Naturopathic assessment, diagnosis and treatment draws from a number of modalities (therapies) and is tailored to the individual.
Treatments may include clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, physical treatments, acupuncture, and lifestyle counselling. Currently, in Ontario, the naturopathic medical system is governed by stringent regulations and guidelines.
The framework includes education at an accredited institution, professional licensing, provincial standards of practice, and a commitment to ongoing research and education.
A wide variety of conditions can be treated with naturopathy, including:
- Hormonal Imbalances for both men and women
- Digestive disturbances including: IBS, SIBO, IBD, Food Sensitivities
- Mood, Energy, and Stress
- Pain Management
- Correcting immune system imbalances
- Cardiovascular care including: lowering cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar
